Abstract The purpose of study is to define the prototypes of site and floor plan patterns and to find the necessity for traditional rural houses in mountain area of Chonbuk puovince.The sites of houses are sloped irregular shape and have difference of ground level beteen front road and building area because of its topographical condition. In the lower class houses, monchae(quarter of master), ahlaichae(male space)and auxiliary buildings are arranged to L-type and U-type and floor plan patterns are 3 kan or 4 kan linear gyubjib pattern that have ahlaibang(male space) and dojang(storage). In the upper class houses, the arrangement of building has an order in its hierarchy and entrance axis to anchae(quarter of mastress) come cross the male(master~s) space. The most floor plan patterns are 4 kan or 5 kan linear gyubjib pattern but some buildings are L-type and U-type.Gonnonbang of house has auxiliary kitchen and side floor, so it has privacy and independency in the house.
