A Study on the styles of church architecture in the treaty port of modern China |
Abstract |
The main theme of this study is concerned with the styles of church architecture in the treaty port of modern China. Another purpose of the study is to understand the influence and localization process of western architectural culture that have been introduced into modern East Asia. The results of this study are summarized as follows:1. The styles of church architecture in the treaty port of modern China can be characterized as a coexistence of the two eclectic styles-Western style church architecture and syncretism of Chinese Western style architecture.2. In the early mission period, the European Mission orders(Jesuits,Dominicans,Franciscans) had a lots of influence upon East Asia missions. But , in the 19C-20C, the European Powers(France, America, Germany, The united Kingdom) had much influence upon East Asia missions. On the other hand, anti-Christianity movement had an effect on the eclectic style church architecture.3. Main materials of church architecture in the treaty port of modern China were gray brick, red brick and stone. Especially, in the case of Catholic church, gray brick, Red brick and special brick were used together in Korea and China for presentation of Western architectural detail. It means that brick making and brick work of China had much effect on the early church architecture in Korea. |
