Abstract This paper studies the transitional space design which has great possibilities to be adopted for the future planning of office buildings at C.B.D. in Korean urban fringe.While office building is a private space, city is public space. An intermediate process between these two is necessary. This transitional space can mitigate the psychological impact and ease the physical access. The purpose of this study to analyze the role of transitional space and to propose the direction of optimum design.1) The concepts and characteristics of transitional space can be regarded as accessibility, openness, continuity, and interaction.2) In external space, the application of various transitional factors, giving attractive impression and comfortability, should be considered.3) In entrance space, the measure to make accessiblity more easier and to gain wider mutual permeation should be provided.4) Inside the building, the transitional space has not to be remained empty, but has to play the role of various functional space in order to provide more amenity.
