Abstract 'GyopJip' has been supposed as to present the most sophisticated style in Korean traditional housing architecture in the aspect of space planning. In this study, the so-called 'GyopJip' is devided into several different sub-categories according to 1) the layering of columns and 2) the forming and distributiong of rooms. And their apprearance and meaning are investigated in the history of housing architecture of the late Choson Dynasty.As a conclusion, GyopJip the proper appreared in the early 19c. as the result of 1) economics of enlarging residential space with relatively low cost, 2) the overcoming of structural problemes with the help of skilled carpenters being freed from the official guild, and 3) the necessity to accommodate the large household of the matured peasantry class in the late Choson Dynasty.
