Abstract In recent years, epoxy-modified cementitious composites have been widely used as finish and repair materials in the constructionindustry because of their excellent properties. However, conventional epoxy-modified mortars and concretes have an inferior applicability and cost performance ratio due to the two-component mixing of the epoxy resin and hardener. The authors found the fact even without any hardener, epoxy resin can harden by a ring-opening reaction in the presence of the alkalies prodeced by the hydration of cement in the epoxy-modified cementitious composites. The purpose of this study is to clear the degree of hardening of epoxy resinin epoxy-modified mortars by the various analyses of hardened epoxy resin. From the test results, the degree of hardening in the epoxy-modified mortars without the hardener decreases with increasing polymer-cement ratio, and the polymer-cement ratios of 10 to 20% are recommended for the preparation of epoxy-modified mortars without the hardener.
