Abstract Due to the preference of steel as structural members and the inherent nature of the structural steel work itself, the fall hazards during erection work are increased accordingly and mostly resulted in fatal injuries. This study conducted the analysis of the steel erection activities, the case study of fall accident records, and the site survey of ongoing steel work to find out the engineering causes of falls and the constraints and solutions of fall protection from the view of the utilization of the fall protection facilities(FPFs).The major direct causes of falls are proven to be the lack or misuse of the FPF. Thus, the effective application of FPFs is essential to prevent fall accidents. To improve the utilization of the fall protection facilities, 1) boosting the supply of various fall protection facilities applicable to the particular steel work conditions, 2) reinforcement of the relevant regulations and the safety assessment, 3) proper consideration prior to the site erection, and 4) research and development on enhanced serviceability of FPF are immediately recommended.
