Abstract Contemporary architecture has lost its abundant space and form due to loss of existence value of light. The purpose of this study is to revalute the light to analyse Louis I. Kahn's theory and works, who understood that light was essential element in space and form, andexpressed it to his works very clearly.Although Kahn's theory of light is so difficult to understand in common sense, he revaluated the light in fact that he approached more essentially and took active attitude that light is equal to space which is essence in architecture. Futhermore the meaning of light in his works is eventual means that give perfect value to all existence. As a result, space composition by light in Kahn's works could be classified the following factor : 1) Hierarchy : this doesn't mean the importance of space, but light makes order in each space by it's own characteristic light. 2) Symbolization : Kahn opposed the loss of centuralization due to the homo-geneous space which modern architecture sought. So he recovered the human place as he granted the best light in centural space. 3) Direction : Kahn intened to clear the existence of space for the visual direction by rhythm, as he took light-and-shade to space and took special light to each room. 4) Limitation : Generally space is limited by the screen like the wall, but Kahn used light as the element of space limit. He composed the space that he give the light, which decided the character of the space, to each space that had its own function. Finally light is the main theme that recovered the phase architecture.
