Abstract Environmental protection of the earth and reduction of construction wastes are becoming a social issue and one of the ways to solve the problem is to develop recycleable construction materials. As a fundamental approach for the development of a panel to substitute plywood, we present analytical and numerical analysis of a sandwich beam which is a simplified model for formwork panel design. Experiment is carried out to evaluate the structural performance of an newly developed plastic sandwich panel. The panel shows a possibility as a promising material for replacing plywood. Pilot applicaiton of the panel is also reported.
