Abstract In around 1930, when the earliest modernized residential development took place in the walled city of Seoul, the development sites were evenly divided into rectangular lots and blocks, and grid system of streets were introduced in the middle of the existing urban network that looks as irregularly laid out as almost chaotic. Within these rectangular lot of new development, house of traditional style with identical plan were built. In some parts of the present city of Seoul, both pattern of chaotic and grid system of streets as well as houses still remain. This study examine the change of dwelling pattern and discuss the nature of each pattern through the comparison between the two. The study discussed the organization of lot-block-street system, and then its interactive relationship to the type of houses.
