Title |
A Study on the European Railroad Station in 19th Century |
Abstract |
For a long time we have focused our attention solely on those elements of 19th century architecture which foreshadowed the architecture of today. So we need the interpretation the 19th century in its own terms. Railway stations are to the nineteenth century what cathedrals were to the thirteeth century. In this view this study deals with European Railroad Station especially focused on the architectural characteristics of train-shed. The extend to which the train-shed might be incorporated in the station facade was a major issue for architects. There were three methods taken:completely hide the shed, reveal it directly, or play with its form. And we can interpret railroad station in 19th century, as we do architecture of early periods, as a free handling of forms and images. This new view redefines the 19th century European Architecture from the point of view of period as well as relating it to the high-tech and ornament perceptible in the recent current of late-modern architecture and post-modern architecture. |
