Abstract This paper provides the equation of motion for holonomically and/or nonholonomically constrained structural systems. For this, we investigate the Gauss's principle and determine the control forces satisfying the given constraints. The results are compared with the generalized inverse method and two numerical examples are presented. Also, this paper grasp another deeper meaning of the Gauss's principle.
