Abstract This paper examines the behavior of H-shape steel beams with web openings prestressed with high-strength steel strands. In particular, the deflection and strains in the steel beam with web openings and high-strength steel strands are examined in the positive bending moment regions, over the full range of loading to failure. H-shape steel beams prestressed with high-strength steel strands offer major advantages, elastic behavior to higher loads and increased ultimate capacity.Three types of H-shape steel beams with web ioenings are considered; (1)Conventional H-shape steel beams with web openings without prestressing steel strands; (2)H-shape steel beams with web openings with steel strands prestressed anchored at the ends; and (3)H-shape steel beams with web eccentricities of openings with steel strands prestressed. Opening locations were varied to investigate moment-shear ratios 0.45, 0.8, 3.3 meters and . Through the comparison between load-deflection and load-strain behavior of these beams, the experiment shows that the ultimate and the yield loads can be increased substantially by adding high-strength steel strands to the H-shape steel beams with web openings, and by prestressing them.
