Abstract The general analysis method of tapered beam member has the numerical instability and some other weaknesses. Galerkin element method eliminates these shortcomings, but it uses very complex functions as bubble functions, and it is more difficult to apply the method to dynamic and buckling analysis than the general FEM(finite element method). So, we present the modified method using the bubble function composed of simple polynomial function and the general FEM technique. The present method has the effectiveness of the Galerkin element method and the simplicity of applying to the analysis of the common and particular shapes of tapered members.
