Abstract In order to estimate shear strength of reninforced concrete(RC) interior beam-column joints, it is important to understand the influence of design variables (joint lateral reinforcement, column axial load, beam longitudinal bar bond strength within the joint, etc.,). Three half-scale beam-column subassemblages were tested to evaluate the shear strength of high-strength RC interior beam-column joints under simulated earthquake loading. The variables were material strength and the existence of transverse beams. The test showed that maximum joint shear stress of a specimen with transverse beams developed at least 1.3 times that of a corresponding specimen without transverse beams.Non-linear finite element analysis was performed to understand the influence of design variables. As the results of analysis, the influence of design variables was found significant on the joint shear behavior.
