Abstract In considering of the lateral force resisting behavior for a high-rise building, the outrigger system is now realized as one of the most effective systems. In this study, for the purpose of minimizing certain disadvantages of concentrated outrigger system, a distributed outrigger system is introduced. And the optimum location of the concentrated outrigger system is also determined by using the general displacement and drift solutions. The effectiveness of each outrigger system is analyzed and compared on the basis of the reductions of core moment and top drift. Also, the behavior of the outrigger system and the forces of members composing outrigger system are investigaed by the static analysis. The contributions of each mode to total dynamic response and total base shear are observed by the concept of base shear ratio. Displacement and story drift can be controlled effectively at the optimum location, and the effectiveness of outriggers is improved by increasing the rigidity of girders and exterior columns. The stress concentration is also reduced considerably by using thedistributed outrigger girders. If the rigidity of girders and columns is increased and the distributed outrigger girders are used, the total dynamic response can be reduced because of the reduction of higher-mode contributions.
