Abstract The lateral drift is and important factor for the serviceability and may have a harmful influence on the safety due to the second moment induced by the p-& effect in tall byildings. Engineers would put limitations on the drift according to structural design codes or their experience. Because of the characteristics of the problem, they control it not quantitatively, but by a trial-error approach. This study has purpose of quantitative and direct control of the lateral drift in tall byildings by substructuring sensitivity analysis. The sensitivity analysis and substructuring are introduced for the drift control and optimization. An efficient sensitivity algorithm is developed, considering the diaphragm characteristics of buildings. A program based on the proposed algorithm is developed and gives the additional stiffness required to satisfy the drift constraints in each story. It also has a capability that opimizes the lateral resistant system according to the given optimization criteria such as minimum weight. In this study, the lateral resistant systems such as shear walls, braced frame systems and belt trusses are treated.
