Abstract A computer simulation model of a direct expansion (DX) air-conditioning system which is modular, highly nonlinear and quasi-steady state was developed to simulate various operational techniques. This is an intermediate study toward the simulation-optimization study as a next phase. It is possible to predict power consumption that would be required to cool the building by combinations of various equipment operations. They are controls for cooling coil face-split circuit, condenser fan, compressor cylinder unloading, bypass air around cooling coil, variable airflow rate, and heat pipe heat exchanger. Although many simulation models have been reported, care should be exercised for them to use in a numerical siimulation-optimization environment with which to evaluate optimal quasi-steady state control strategies for air-conditioning system. Particular attention in this study is focused on the cooling mode of operation to control both temperature and humidity. Results of the model are compared with field monitoring data of an existing supermarket building located in a hot and humid climate.
