Abstract This paper deals with experimentation of concrete filled square steel tube (CFST) columns to investigate the hysteresis, strength, and deformational caracteristics of them. Experimental parameters were the width to thickness ratio of steel tubes, magnitude of axial load, and with or without shear suds inside the steel tube. To investate the column behavior under combined axial load and moment, at the end of the columns under constant axial load during the tests. The following results were obtained from the experiments; The maximum moment capacity of CFST columns can safely predicted by the generalized strength superimposed theory. The columns behave linearly within the allowable stress limit calculated by the generalized strength superimposed theory. The strength and deformational capacities of the CFST columns were not influenced by the shear stud attacked inside the column tubes. Maximum ratational capacity at the end of the CFST columns were about 3 times larger than that of the pure steel tube columns
