Title |
A Proposal of Development Strategies and Guidelines for the Traditional Urban Residential Districts |
Abstract |
The purpose of this study is to provide reasonable and applicable development strategies for the traditional residential districts which reflect the architectural and urban characteristics of traditional Korean city. The main direction of development of old residential blocks proposed here is to conserve the area not by preserving the artifacts as they are, but by reviving the architectural and urban characteristics in new buildings.Through a close examination of the existing condition of Gyedong, several design elements are extracted and translated into development strategies; those are to preserve the existing street pattern, to arrange the existing lots into development units for a small-scale housing cluster, to reflect the introverted characteristics of a traditional housing in a buiding design. Based on these strategies, various design guidelines are proposed in four categories; revitalization of existing neighborhoods, grouping of lots as development units, street system and parking, building arrangement and access pattern. |
