Abstract The space of traditional architecture is characterized by its visual structure that, similar to the flow of water, induces the viewer's attention in a natural, spontaneous way. The resulting flow of spaces, which are disigned with close intention, is realized through the visual structure formed by relations among neighboring spaces and various openings. The multilateral analysis on these visual structure of traditional architecture can be executed by installing the concept of visual axis.The conclusion of this research can be summarized as the following:1. The variety of visual axis found in the traditional upper class housings is the result of interaction between the natural factor, such as the geographical feature, and the cultural factor, which together determined the architectural forms.2. The visual axis is derived from the active opening of spaces, and is the result of conscious planning.3. The visual structure of Sarang in the upper class housings enriches its opulent prospect in accordance with the hierarchy of space, along with the increase in its visual depth.4. Sarang is placed aside Numaru, an opened space for visual connection, or is constituted with doors with large openings. Thus the exterior spaces are injected into Sarang, and consequently its visual structure extends itself from the inside to the surrounding nature
