A Study on Peter Rice`s Design Methodology Utilizing the Glass |
Abstract |
This study is focused on the works of Peter Rice who executed many projects utilizing the glass to obtain the transparency of structure, particularly for the "Serre' of National Science museum in La Villette. We have seen many modern architectural projects succeeded in obtaining one-way and two-way transparency with the technical advancement. But their methods to sustain the glass could disturb the transparency of the facade. Forming RFR with Francis and Ritchie for this project, Peter Rice showed us his original philosophy and methodology of structural glass, proceeding a correlation with different intervenients to arrive at satisfactory details, predicting divers structural movements and classing the hierarchy of each elements for the project. His worldwide fixation detail using glasses is considered as the most advanced technique until now, and his methodology has resulted in a transparent cubic glass structure which permits not only the two-way transparency but also the presence of transparent surface of glass with minimum presence of supporting structure. |
