Abstract Korea became the member of the Universal Copyright Convention in 1987, which provided for reciprocity of copyright protection among signatory countries. A copyright is a changing area of practice that is becoming increasingly important to creative professionals. However, the concept of copyright protection is not yet adequately recognized to the architectural profession in our country. This study aims to define the characteristics of an architectural works copyright compare with the general concepts of the copyright law and international standards. It extracts professional viewpoints on an architectural works copyright that reflect the complicated character of architecture as a work of applied art. As the result of the study, it proposes some practical use of copyrights in architecture not only to protect architects' right and promote creative working conditions but also to protect our profession from competitive international markets.
