The rite is a basic need existing in the collective unconscious of human being and expresses human value symbolically. Investigating the ritual behavior in Korean housing is very effective viewpoint to understand a symbolic nature of housing. This thesis aims at providing informations for understanding housing spaces through analyzing ritual behavior according to a view of rite in Contemporary housing. Our study is due to an empirical analysis. Our survey was perfomed for 493 couples living in their current houses for more than 5 years. Findings are as follows; The contemporary housing is endowed the meaning of identity and the meaning of the central space distinguished from the outside by the rite. And An-bang possesses the meaning of central spaces symbolically, in which the traditional ritual behaviors were performed. However, because of increasing usage of Ma-ru(living room) for the convenience in the contemporary family rite, Ma-ru(living room) possesses meaning of the central space for the gathering of family. According to a view of rite, the type of continuity of the traditional rite shows stronger tendency to continuity of the traditional ritual behavior, on the other hand the usage of ritual space is changed moderately because of convenience in the type of change of the traditional rite. Through analyzing the view for rite, we forsee that Jae-rai rite would persist and a contemporary family rite would increase. It is anticipated that the rite would be an important function in strengthening the companionship and in providing the identity to the family. |
