Abstract In the process of plan making, one has to visualize the shape of architectural space through imaginary visual perception. This research aims to devise a methodology which illustrates space visualization in architectural plan. The concept of enclosing balance was introduced as a technique by which imaginary visual perception of architectural space is simulated. In the field of enclosing balance, the inner core of central basin can be robustly distinguished from outer periphery. This central core may be identified as a seed of perceived space. The field of enclosing balance can be used in architectural design teaching as a tool of visualizing the sensitive interaction between wall surfaces in architectural plan. The field of enclosing balance can also provide a solid basis on which a computational approach to identifying space primitives in architectural plan can be successfully constructed. A robust technique of identifying space primitives in architectural plan can be incorporated into computer aided architectural design a useful tool of facilitating architectural plan making.
