Abstract This study intents to provide useful information for future housing design after reviewing literature on future society and housing and also surveying opinions of consumers and experts. The survey collected opinions about the changes of future lifestyle and housing design characters. Major findings of the study folllow as: 1) The respondents expect that 'woman's employment,' 'single living' and 'adoption of information technology' will increase rapidly in the future. 2) Housing experts expect that Korean traditional design characters will be popular, but consumers do not agree to it. Experts expect 'popularity of small houses,' but consumers anticipate 'larger home' in the future. 3) Experts in housing prefer function-oriented rooms such as 'home office,' 'walk-in closet' and 'home bar,' while non-experts look out for 'hobby-room/shop,' 'playroom,' 'family room,' and 'indoor garden' as preferred space for future housing. 4) The respondents in general select 'a large screen TV' as the most preferred item in the future and also choose 'water purifying system,' and 'fire and disaster protection system,' 'automatic air-cleaning system' as preferred items. Since the tastes and opinions are so various, a variety of housing types are expected to appear in the future market. The recent development of high-tech homes for single and double income no kid (DINK) families evidently shows that people's expectation on future housing in this research are becoming to be realized soon.
