Abstract Construction quality is not a matter of construction phase only but the whole construction process including planning, design, and construction phases. Especially the quality of design is very critical in achieving the quality of construction because every construction work is based on the output of the design phase such as drawings and specifications. Accordingly contractors need design output with better quality to achieve better construction quality. Here, it means designers can be considered as suppliers of the design output and contractors as users or customers who produce final structure using it. Therefore, in this study, evaluation of design quality in the domestic construction industry was executed from the point of construction engineers' view. The evaluation was based on the quality of various information - general, material-related, and construction method-related information - and attributes of the information such as correctness, conveniency, consistency, and constructability. The causes of design quality deterioration and the opportunities for improvement were also investigated.
