A Study on Kyungsung Institute of Engineering and Architectural Education |
Abstract |
This study is a positive research on the Kyungsung Institute of Engineering, the higher education institute established during the Japanese colonial period, focusing on its features including the education programme. The study on this Institute, which played a major part in the formation of Korean modern architecture, will provide a basis for evaluation, or revaluation, on our architecture and architects from the modern era. By recovering the early organization of its faculty and analyzing the programme subjects, and comparing these with those of Japan's domestic education system based on national policies, it was concluded that, though established under the Japanese government, it produced many architects who activated the modernization of Korean architecture. This is against the usual belief that the Institute was merely a lower, technical sch001; it was rather part of the Japanese education policy to support its entry into the world Powers, executed in Japan and its colonies. This study further investigated Kyungsung Institute's relation with the Special department of Industrial Practice School, proving that the former; department of architecture was indeed the first professional architectural education institute of Korea. This study will in turn lay a foundation in the comprehension of the Korean architecture during the colonial period and after the Liberation on l945 |
