Abstract This paper examined various aspects of linear and nonlinear response analysis of building structures subjected to spectrum compatible simulated earthquake motions for design purposes. This simulated motions has constant velocity response spectra in the range of period from O.5 to 5.O seconds. The response spectrum method widely used in the seismic analysis of linear structures has been proposed to be different mode superposition methods by several investigators, and the differences between combinations with an elastic modal analysis is reviewed closely The purpose of this paper is to propose an altermative method where a nonlinear multi-degree-of-freedom building structure with a long period may be analysed by an extension of a response spectrum method. The nonlinear seismic analysis of high-rise building structures through the technique proposed in this study may serve as a more convenient for preliminary designs, instead of the time history analysis.
