Abstract It is urgently demanded to provide day centers due to increasing percentage of female emp1oyment in Korea. Family day care centers which utilize existing housing are a strategic mear to extend day care services effectively. Apartment units have great potential to develop standardized type of family day care centers with simple and low-cost renovation due to the typical forms. This study aims to provide a design guideline for renovation for family day care centers r apartment units. The study analyzes interior layouts and space use patterns as well as collects examples of renovation in the centers. The study finds that a living room is the center of day care services in the centers. Children play and are taught in the living room. Moreover, their area extend to a balcony for dynamic activities and a bedroom for static activities. Renovation were conducts to follow children's space use patterns. Common examples of renovation are to extend living area a balcony and to an adjacent room to solve confined interior space. The study proposes design guidelines for renovation in apartment units to enlarge day care area to devide activity zones, to secure hygiene and safety requirement, and to use outdoor playgrounds for the purposes of day care
