On Louis Kahn`s Architectural Concepts |
Abstract |
The conceptual system which comprises Kahn's architectural thinking is understood as follow : 1) In the course of thinking, Kahn's concepts appear to be interrelated as a 'system' in a fixed framework. The progress of Kahn's architectural thinking is systematized in the following process: Kahn's world view or architectural view→dichotomous division as a method of inquiry→contrasting concepts→ synthesis→the central concept→subsidiary concepts→design. 2) It is understood that the reason for the application of different dondepts during different stages in Kahn's system is because Kahn's views on creativity and architecture, which he was trying to express through his work, changed. The terms of his discussions became increasingly abstract and reduced in scope, while at the same time converging more narrowly on architecture alone. 3) In spite of this change in concepts and motives, his conceptual system was maintained within the confines of an established system, due to his continued reliance on the theme of relating contrasting concepts. |
