A Study on the 凹 : Shaped House in Posong Kun , Chonnam Province |
Abstract |
This study looks into the formal aspects and compositional features of space in the Shaped houses in Posong-Kun, Chonnam Province, and interprets their architectural significance. This housing type is found in the residence of Lee Yong-Woo(l908) in Posong-Ub, Okam-Li and that of Lee Gum-Jae(circa 1900) of DuMyang-Myun, Obong-Li. Distinct from the general cornered houses Shaped houses have a linear body of 5 kan with wings attached at both ends to its rear side. Formally, the wings, as well as the main body, display a sort of frontality, which, when seen from the front, discourages the viewer's presumption of its whole size, since it can be easily taken for a simple rectangle plan housing. In terms of its use, the Anchae becomes more complex as it inherits certain functions of Sarangche, the men's quarters. Outdoor spaces are divided into each characteristic courts by use of not the traditional method of multiple Chae(pavilion) and Dom(fence) but the consequent figures from the housing's Shaped plan. In indoor spaces, Maru, used as a family room, is classified into semi-open Maru and enc1osed Marubang, that enables its active use uninfluenced by weather The composition of Shaped houses is one of many formal variations developed in housing architecture from the early modern period's rural region, which wouldn't have been possible without a sufficient understanding of traditional wooden structures and a modified sense of dwelling |
