Title |
The Patterns of Structural Achievement of Setbacks in Tall Buildings |
Abstract |
The rigid discipline of a prismatic tower form characteristic of internationaI style and modernist high-rise designs has been replaced in many cases by higHy articulated vertical modulations of the building enveIope demonstrated by postmodern architectural expressions. The change in architectura1 trend and the computer technoIogy in structural engineering enable tall buildings to be more arbitrary and dramaticaIly articulated. The structural patterns of setbacks are attempted to be classified from structural engineers viewpoint and building examples are presented. 1 few structural systems including bundled tube system, outrigger system, and diagonally braced system allows to put the setbacks by structuraI system itself. Setbacks resulting from transferring of column loads are essentially based on two transfer mechanism; beam action and truss action. This methods of setbacks includes inclined column, transfer girder, transfer truss, column bracket and Vierendeel truss. |
