Abstract The propose of this paper is to study the behavior of H-shape steel beams with web openings prestrssed with high-strength steel strands and to develop their ultimate strength model. Four beams with concetric rectangular web opening and four prestressed beams with concentric rectangular openings, and four prestressed beams with ecentric rectangular openings were tested to develop and verify the ultimate stength model. The ultimate strength model was developed to predict the strength of H-shape steel at the web opening with varying amounts of moment and shear in the form of moment-shear interaction diagrams. The beam is modeled as an elasto-plastic material that exhibits no strain hardening. The yield stress is defined as a function of the assigned shear stress according to von Mises yield criterion. The model is compared with experimental results and is used to study the effect the strength of beams with web opening.
