Abstract Building construction is a process to create building spaces. Construction schedules are plans to complete such spaces. Most scheduling methods, however, have difficulties in controlling construction spaces since they mainly consider the activities and their relations. The purgose of this research is 1) to incorrorate the concepts of construction space into scheduling and 2) to develop the method to estimate space demands and availabilities. Based on previous efforts to incorporate space concept into scheduling, severaI concepts of construction space usage are developed for the space-based scheduling. This scheduling method divides building spaces into several steps according to their locations and construction phases in process, and the spaces are linked to one another to show their preceding and succeeding relationships in process. Pivot resources and corresponding work activities are assigned to the divided spaces, as existing scheduling methods allocate resources to activities. Then space demands and availabilities are estimated using the concepts presented in this research.
