Developments and Architectural Characteristics of Elderly Care Facilities in Japan |
Abstract |
There are many similarities between Korea and Japan in the care of their The proportion of older people is increasing dramatically, the two nations have depended a great deal on the traditional family system based on the Confucian concept of filial piety for the care of older people, and regulations on elderly care facilities have comparable standards. Moreover Japan has experienced many trials and errors in providing long-term care facilities for older people. It is very useful for us, therefore, to research Japanese developments for the purpose of preparing elderly care facilities in Korea. This paper first identifies elderly care facilities in Japan as four types; Geriatric Hospital, Long-Term Care Wards, Elderly Health Facility and Special Nursing Home. Then the development of those facilities and the background of it are analysed. Finally, this paper tries to identify architectural characteristics and their meanings by comparing the different standards of those facilities. |
