Abstract There have been attempts to increase the damping capacity in building systems and reduce structural responses. These attempts have centered on adding an energy-dissipative system like a tuned mass damper to the building system and increasing the overall effective damping. However, we can consider constraints to obtain more reduced response as structural designers want. Their addition yields the control force satisfying them. Applying a proper constraint to the structure with a tuned mass damper and using Generalized Inverse Method, we can explicitly calculate the control force exerted on the system. With the determination of the constraint force, in this study, we present expressions for the design of tuned mass damper and the extra force provided by actuators.
