Abstract This study is to investigate the characteristic of energy consumption and to present basic data for establishing typical energy consumption value in office buildings. The average energy consumption in the office buildings analyzed was 213Mca1/m2· year in 1996. As the total floor area of each buildings enlarges till 40,OOOm2', the typical energy consumption value is tend to decrease. By analyzing the collected data from 1992 to 1996, it is concluded that the consumption of each heat sources(electricity and natural gas) was increased year after year. And the loads in office buildings consisted of 57% of general electricity, 30% of heating load and 13% of cooling load similarly year by year. Also, the difference of outdoor temperature significantly resulted in the variation of energy consumption for heating and cooling, and the minimum energy consumption was recorded when the outdoor temperature was around 15'C .
