Abstract The purpose of this study is to analyse and evaluate design-review system in San Francisco, U.S.A. which helps Korean cities to provide applicable design-review method on the basis of urban aesthetic considerations. In San Francisco, design-review is major implementation system to urban design policy, included Building Permission Process, Discretionary Review, Variances Review, Conditional Uses, Board of Permit Appeals and so on. Especially, there are special review systems for landmarks and historic districts
As a conclusion, the experience of San Francisco cases shows us the way how to control and what is important for townscape-control in practice. These are as followings. (1)Not only large project but small projects should be reviewed by the design-review system. (2)As an early step, "special townscape area" can be established. (3) We should prepare various design-review systems such as uses, variences, appeals, and so on. (4)Appeal system is a quite important to make it more flexible. (5)Design review should be opened to public and take due process.
