Abstract The design problem is characterized by ill-definedness and interactiveness of design criteria. These characteristics causes difficulty in solving the design problems. The difficulty level of the design studio projects should be adjusted to fit the learner's capability to ensure the educational effect.
Difficulty level can be controlled by setting up the detailed objectives of each design projects in two categories defining the elements of design thinking to be trained and defining the design constraints to be given. Abstractness of the design information also influences the problem space of the projects, which is related to the difficulty of solving the problems. Articulation of the design project is an another method to support the learners to find the right way at problem solving. It is advised that each design project should be composed under the consideration of step-by-step extention principle.
