Abstract Even though current use of computers in the design practice gave some merits in terms of design productivity, there are still many problems inherent in the design process.
One of the main problems is the separation of the design and performance evaluation processes. This study, thus, focuses on how to integrate these two processes into a single design process. Four main research efforts include as follows: 1) To establish a primary strategy to develop a desired system, 2) To design a data model supporting building performance evaluation, 3) To develop an input module for the design system, and 4) To explore development strategies and experiments for intelligent design agents.
The development strategy includes 1) a tight linkage between the design and performance evaluation processes, 2) a building data model-based approach, 3) an Internet and client/server-based system, and 4) a design agent-based approach. The data model developed is based on several concepts such as the dual structure of form/space, a semantic modeling of spatial relationships, databases of building components. Finally, some design agents for building performance evaluation have been developed to test the Internet-based building performance paradigm.
