Abstract It is observed that thermal performance of apartment with very high thermal capacity of envelope and interior structure differs considerably from the detached dwelling. This paper describes an experimental and numerical study to analyse the thermal characteristics of apartments with Ondol heating system. Theoretical analysis module of Ondol based on one-dimensional finite-difference solution was developed and made to be connected with TRNSYS. Experiments on a field survey were carried out and the results were used to validate a simulation model. The experimental and numerical temperature variations were in good agreement over the period examined.
The main results show that a thermal capacity in apartments leads to reducing the room temperature fluctuation by 1∼2℃ corresponding to changes of the ambient temperature and intermittent heating schedule.
