Title Influence of the Shape of Space and Its Visual Connection to the Outdoors on the Sense of Continuity Produced by Lighting

Abstract Our previous studies showed that we can experience a sense of continuity between the inside of a room and the outdoors by adjusting the illuminance of the artificial lighting. The aim of this study is to examine whether or not the optimum illuminance for the sense of continuity depends on the shape of the interior space (experiment 1), and to define the visual connection of the inside of the room to the outdoors (experiment 2). It is found that the room shapes and the visual connection of the interior to the outdoors have no significant effect on the optimum illuminance setting in recognizing continuity, and the variance of the results is very small between observers. Moreover, the optimum illuminance of the inside changes linearly with the illuminance of the outdoors on a logarithm scale regardless of room shape or visual connection of the interior to the outdoors, indicating that the lighting system for the sense of continuity between two spaces can be applicable to various spaces by rather simple methods.
