Abstract |
Online purchase is becoming a popular way of buying books. The pros and cons of the online purchase are very clear: the elimination of travelling effort to bookshops versus the difficulty of catching on the true contents of books. The true contents of books are not always seen on the monitor screen. Furthermore, one cannot easily locate the books of his/her interests in navigating the classified subjects. This study is concerned with the subject classification of architectural books for online bookshops. For that purpose, some of major online bookshops have been investigated in terms of the structure and contents of their classifications. It has been found that most classifications of online bookshops have been devised without architectural expertise and consequently have resulted in the poor efficiency of online search, minimizing the benefits from the current information technology. In addition, it is suggested that information specialists in architecture are needed for the efficient handling of architectural information in the era of information explosion. |
