Abstract Korean hospital now enters the new era of remodeling from that of new construction. In hospital extension and reconstruction, each methods must be set up according to the different characteristics of areas such as ward areas, outpatient areas, diagnosis/treatment areas, supply areas, administration areas, education/research areas, miscellaneous areas. According to department`s characteristics, different remodeling strategy must be established.
The purpose of this study is to suggest the way of corresponding and expansion methods of area according to remodeling of general hospitals. This study is to investigate and analyze the remodeling type, change of area composition, and space constitution of general hospitals in the terms of their architectural expansion. And this study consists of case study on 3 general hospitals focused on their change of net area, remodeling type, and expansion method of area according to the remodeling of hospitals. Consequently, this study can be applied to design guideline for the remodeling of general hospitals.
