Abstract The structural system that discreterized from continuous shells is frequently used to make a large space structures and these structures show the unstable phenomena by snap-through or bifurcation when a load level reaches certain critical value.
In this system, space frame structures with rigid-joint is used to make a single layer roof system and have an advantage of the economical and the beautiful. The joints of these structures are, however, hard to discriminate between pin-joint and rigid-joint and consist of semi-rigid joint, in practically. The instability phenomena of shell-typed structures show a strong non-linearity and a very sensitive behavior according to the rigidity of joint.
In this study, therefore, we are investigating to grasp the nonlinear instability behavior that make the fundamental collapse mechanism of the large space frame structures with semi-rigid joint, by using numerical analysis method.
