Abstract This study aims to present data for the architectural planning of an Oriental hospital reflecting the characteristics of Oriental medical treatments. The results are as follows: 1)The Oriental hospital studied is composed of the outpatient department(13.55%), the ward(33.95%), the diagnosis and treatment department (14.33%) and the administration & supply department(18.96%). The gross area per bed was 60.0㎡. 2)Selected hospitals for investigation make use of a mixed model of consultation room, which show a very high frequency of use. 3)The average area per bed in the ward was 22.3㎡. The area of the ward composed of main space(42.29%), subsidiary space(19.50%) and public space(38.21%). 4)The average area per bed in the diagnosis and treatment department was 9.09㎡. The main treatment section consisted of the department of examination & radiology(25.51%), physical therapy(38.04%). The high percentage of the physical therapy area exhibits a major characteristic of the space allocation in an Oriental medical hospital. 5)The average area per bed of the management & supply section was as follows: the administration part was 11012㎡ and the Supply part was 14.47㎡. 6)Selected hospitals for investigation show area percentage similar to that of general hospitals having 500 beds, not that of similar-scale general hospital having 100-200 beds. This means that selected hospitals for investigation, which are affiliated in a university, put value on and make much investment in not only education, research and central consultation, but also treatment of outpatient and inpatient.
