Abstract Nowadays, even though the number of churches which make use of symbolic images in church architecture continues to grow, it is too difficult for the general public to understand the meaning of symbolic images expressed. In this sense, the purpose of this study is to provide data which promotes understanding the meaning of symbolic images applied in modern Korea church architecture and to provide data which is relevant to church architecture after this point. For this purpose, firstly the relationship between church architecture and the symbol was investigated, and the examples of symbolic image expressed in western church architecture were simply investigated. Then, the examples of the modern Korean church architecture which expressed the symbolic images were collected and the trends of symbolic meanings applied were analyzed.
The outcome of this study is as follows. Firstly, the churches use of symbolic images continued to grow rapidly in the '90s. The study revealed 19 different types of symbolic imagery and the images that were utilized were mainly a “shield”, “A?Ω”, “gate”, “praying hands”, “ark”, “light”, “union” and “crown” in the '90s. Secondly, a “Shield” was utilized mainly on the facade the church from '70s to '80s, but, in '90s, “A?Ω” and “praying hands” were the main symbol used. Thirdly, new attempts were made to express the cross as an architectural element and to express the cross in the space. Lastly, the church was found to be increasing its use of symbolic imagery through architecture, although this is only a small amount at the moment and the symbolic image is just converged on several things. The people who engage in church architecture have to find out various types of imagery and to express them and make use of them. At this point, we hope the specificity of the holy church will be represented abundantly through the church architecture
