Abstract The present work examined and analyzed the dependancy of noise level in subway stations on the architectural design characteristics of subway stations, in an attempt to provide fundamental design data for the improvement of the acoustic environment of subway internal space. Subway stations in Seoul city, currently being used, were categorized as a number of groups according to their architectural design features. Noise levels in 12 stations were evaluated and they're compared with their architectural design features. The curvature of railway was not an influencing factor for noise levels in stations. It was found that sum-sik are more efficient than sang-dae-sik for under-platform section, and the semi-circular shape for railway-side section. Aluminium spenderal and fan shape aluminium with hole were found to be more efficient than the other finish materials for ceiling.
