Abstract Bentonite mat has been used to a kind of waterproofing materials for underground concrete structure because of its watertightness property by water-swelling under tamped environment.
In domestic condition, there is no specification and standardization for evaluation bentonite mat whether it has sufficient performance to use bentonite mat waterproofing system in the field conditions.
In this paper, swelling properties of bentonite powder and mat was investigated by optical microscope and volume expansion, and water permeability coefficient was measured by the triaxial permeability testing method(ASTM D 5084).
The results are as follows.
1) Swelling properties of bentonite were estimated about 230~374 percents in average diameter, 1500~1650 percents in total volume.
2) Bentonite mat was expanded more double times in distilled water.
3) Water permeability coefficient of Bentonite mat was measured about 1.21×10-9cm/sec~4.36×10-9cm/sec.
