Abstract |
Inspections on structural safety and stability of facilities are one of the most critical tasks during the operation & maintenance(O&M) phase, and it is required legally to have periodical inspections and special inspection when necessary. Although the results of the inspection can be used for immediate remediation of the facilities, they have not been quite helpful for long-term facilities O&M due to the limitations and difficulties in the paper-based inspection information management paradigm. This research took advantage of emerging computer technologies such as database, multimedia and internet technology to overcome the existing problems in the paper-based inspection information management such as lack of reusability and inconsistent facility management. An information management system, named BSIM (Building Safety Inspection Manager), was developed to organize and reuse inspection information in a more efficient way during building operation and maintenance, and to make the information available for future inspections. By analyzing the inspection process and standard forms and reports, the database structure and graphic-user interfaces of BSIM were built. The development of BSIM focused on the eye-inspection process which is the first but the critical step that determines the necessity of further inspections on the facilities. |
